Fungal infections in skin folds are frequently caused by the yeast fungus Candida albicans. The symptoms often include extreme redness, flaking, itching and possible blister formation in the affected area.
Topical fungal infections have traditionally been treated with anti-fungal agents (antimycotics) of different kinds in the forms of creams and ointments.
Treatment with agents of this kind sometimes results in unpleasant side-effects – they are sticky and greasy. Any ointment residue also needs to be washed off before the next application and this frequently results in increased irritation in the area that is being treated.
